First date selfies.

Not an anniversary goes by that I don’t think about the crazy kids in this picture. This was before cell phones & cell phone cameras, of course, which means we took the picture — a selfie before selfies were a thing — with an actual camera, no doubt some sort of 35mm point-and-shoot, then had to send the film off to a lab (!) to be developed. Kind of ballsy for a first official “date,” if you think about it. I don’t know why we wanted to capture the moment on film — sure, there may have been some recreational substances involved — but I’m glad we did.

Those kids had no way of knowing they’d go on to build this messy, wonderful, challenging, love-soaked, shitshow of a life together. But here we are… some 33 years or so since that picture and 31 years (to the day) since a wedding in the midst of a freak Tulsa ice storm.

As far as I can tell, there’s no blueprint for building a three+ decade relationship other than waking up each & every day and making the decision to give it a go yet again. And if we can manage to not kill each other in the process, well, even better.

What can I say? I’m a romantic.
